Working within the justice system is often rewarding and fulfilling, but it is not easy to take on mentally. Those who work in forensics often hear about gruesome acts of brutality, like rape and murder, and those more involved might have to physically look at the evidence. Sometimes, forensic experts testify in court and see the suspect and victim right before their eyes. These experiences leave a lasting impact, no matter how much experience someone may have.
While the nature of the industry poses mental health risks to its workers, the mental health issue in forensics may go beyond exposure to crimes. In 2018, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) conducted a study on what conditions contribute to workplace stress for forensic scientists. Researchers learned that scientists have stress stemming from the crimes that they deal with, citing nightmares, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. However, around 50% of scientists agreed that they were receiving assignments without the manpower to complete them. Over 60% of the respondents indicated feeling a lot of pressure when at work.¹ Workplace efficiency issues are also contributing to stress and mental health issues in the forensic industry.
The combination of the exposure to violent crimes and pressure for productivity leaves workers in forensics in a vulnerable position. It is important to remember that there are endless resources for mental health assistance. Some of our favorites are listed below.
